I don’t think I agree with what Rand says. She tries to sell
environmentalism as putting the needs or “rights” of things like land, over the
rights of people. I don’t really think that this is true. Berliner argues that
environmentalism is a way of thinking that would rather lose the lives of
people than trees, he makes it out that environmentalism is anti-man. I think
this is an oversimplified perspective on the issue. It claims that everything
we do to the earth is necessary for the betterment of man and it insinuates
that environmentalism is a form of self- sacrifice.
I do
not believe this to be true. I think that environmentalism is for the
betterment of man and the general preservation of man as well. Earth is the
only known planet that we have the capability to settle and found our society
on. Without it there is no man. Therefore I think calling environmentalism
“anti-man” is a very childish and reactionary statement. One that reminds me of
a child who only wants to eat candy. It may be what he wants but he doesn’t
know any better. If he only eats candy he will get diabetes. And die. Is not
letting your child only eat candy “anti-child”? No, no it is not.
