Second Blog Post!

I do believe that we still live in a racial society. I believe that people are judged everyday based on their skin color and race. I do not believe that it is in anyway similar to our society pre 1960’s, but I also do not believe that racial prejudice no longer exists. Racial prejudice has taken on a more unrecognizable form.  Being a racist bigot is in no way politically correct. Racism is no longer a political issue; it has become a social issue. Social media networks, such as face book and twitter, serve as proof that people are still racists. In recent news a women of Indian descent won the Miss America pageant. Following her victory twitter became abuzz with hundreds of racial slurs aimed at the new Miss America.
During the civil rights movement of the 1960’s Martin Luther King Jr. was fighting for equality, and fair treatment of African Americans. He did not believe it was fair for people to be treated unjustly because of their race or creed. Martin Luther King did win this argument on a political scale but not a social one. Although the government began to recognize that it was unjust to discriminate against someone for their race, the individual people did not. Racism has taken on more of the form of being an idea or a belief and less of a practice or an action. The evidence of this belief is visible through social media. However they are usually discarded by the average reader because the tweets are not taken seriously as a form of action. They are seen as just being comments by bigoted people who cannot be changed.

America is a country where people are given the right to say what they want, even if what they’re saying is fatuous and bigoted.  While America no longer permits the legal physical abuse or discrimination of others, it does still permit stupid people to say stupid things.
